In traditional formalwear, tailcoats are jackets with a long skirt at the back, which usually divides in two “tails”, and a short front.
Where can I wear a tailcoat?
Some events specify they expect tailcoats. Otherwise, tailcoats are suitable in any situation that requires a formal outfit and encourages a bold statement, e.g. wedding, awards ceremony etc. Specifically for weddings, tailcoats are appropriate for the groom but anyone else wishing to wear one should check with the groom first so they don’t outshine him.
